Thanks to Alfa Romeo and FCA Heritage we attended this year’s 1000 Miglia, once defined by Enzo Ferrari himself as “the most beautiful race in the world”. We completed the whole event, leg after leg, on a breathtaking 1954 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva. Such a mysterious as well as innovative car, designed by Scaglione on an exclusive chassis and featuring many avant-garde technical solutions. The 2021 competition followed the tradition of the route, from Brescia to Rome and back, with legs in Viareggio and Bologna, but this edition introduced an absolute novelty for the re-enactment of the event: for the first time ever, the competition took place in the opposite direction of the recent editions, taking up the counter-clockwise direction of many editions of the original speed race.
June 15, day zero
Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva delivery, sporting and technical checks, distribution of race numbers and road-books, stickers time. Adrenaline and emotional levels raised almost to the top.
June 16, day one
Our journey begun in Brescia where we spent an amazing day on the marvellous 2000 Sportiva. What a car. We passed Pianura Padana from North to South, we crossed the Appennini through the challenging Passo delle Cisa and we approached Tuscany, finishing yesterday’s leg in beautiful Viareggio.
June 17, day two
We left Viareggio in the morning and passed through the centre of Pisa, heading South to join the Tyrrhenian coast once more. From Livorno we easily drove to Calafuria, Castiglioncello and Bibbona to finish Sector 3. Sector 4 crossed the wild Maremma, bringing us to picturesque Castiglione della Pescaia. Our 2000 Sportiva then cruised into Sector 5, leaving the blue sea behind and entering Lazio countryside roads towards Lake Bolsena. Sector 6 drove us from Viterbo to Roma, Caput Mundi.
June 18, day three
The way back from Roma to Bologna has literally been breathtaking. Sectors 7 to 10 brought us from Orvieto to Arezzo, and from Prato to the capital of Emilia-Romagna region through Passo della Futa and Passo della Raticosa. We were still dreaming about Roma’s Carbonara, and was already time for a well-deserved tagliatelle al ragù with a massive dose of Parmigiano.
June 19, day four
Sectors 11 and 12 lead us from Bologna to Modena and Reggio Emilia, then up North to stunning Mantova and romantic Verona. Last hundred kilometers drove us around Lake Garda, where from Desenzano we stopped for the last check in Salò, before the finishing line in Brescia.
A dream came true. Finally. Such an amazing and unforgettable experience: our Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva, mechanics & all the FCA Heritage team, people & friends, organization & staff, our video makers & photographers, Italian roads & sceneries. Thank you everyone and well, that’s all folks!
